Global Health Scholarship

Established by the CARO Global Oncology Committee, the GOC Global Health Scholarship promotes and supports interest in global health among Radiation Oncology residents and fellows. The scholarship provides financial assistance towards travel and living expenses to radiation oncology residents or fellows completing a clinical or research elective in a resource-limited setting. Up to $2,500 in grant monies is available through this scholarship.

This year’s Global Health Scholarships will be considered on a rolling basis and will be reviewed quarterly. Candidatures aussi acceptées en français.

 Eligibility criteria

  • Radiation Oncology residents or fellows who are members of CARO

  • Residents must be enrolled in a fully accredited Canadian Radiation Oncology training program at the time of application, and for the full duration of their elective abroad.

  • Fellows must be enrolled in a Canadian program at these times.

  • Residents must have completed at least one year of residency training.

  • The global health elective must be in a clinical or research field related to oncology.

  • Resident electives must satisfy clinical or research training requirements of the Royal College for Radiation Oncology.

  • The length of the elective is a minimum of four weeks and must be completed within one year of the date of scholarship results announcement.

 Selection criteria

  •  The potential for the elective to provide a meaningful experience in a low resource setting relevant to the candidate’s Radiation Oncology training

  • A clear alignment of elective plans with the GOC’s mission and guiding principles

  • The likelihood that the candidate will have the opportunity to further develop

  • CanMEDS competencies during this elective

  • The candidate’s demonstrated interest in global health and a commitment to professional and personal development during this elective

 Requirement for recipients

  •  Recipients must complete an exit evaluation.

  • Recipients will be asked to present on their elective experience at a CARO meeting, for example the Annual Scientific Meeting within 2 years of the elective experience. In case a presentation is not possible following the elective experience, alternate arrangements will be made in consultation with the GOC for a suitable alternative.

  • Recipients must familiarize themselves with the CAIR Guidelines for Resident Physician Participation in Global Health Elective Placements.
