Jan P. Seuntjens
Biography
Dr. Seuntjens (Ph.D, 1991, University of Ghent, Belgium) is a medical radiation physicist, full professor, James McGill research chair and director of medical physics at McGill University since 2009. He has a background in radiation physics and Monte Carlo (MC) numerical simulations and has been deeply involved in the experimental work behind calibration protocols such as AAPM TG-51 and its Addendum. More recently, he has been concentrating on the use of numerical techniques including MC and machine learning involved in different studies correlating imaging and dosimetric parameters with treatment outcome in radiation therapy. Seuntjens has been actively involved with numerous task groups and working groups of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Commission for Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) most recently in the preparation of protocols and reviews for clinical dosimetry of small fields used in stereotactic radiation therapy (ICRU Report 91, and IAEA Report TRS 483). Seuntjens has co-authored over 180 journal papers and is one of the main authors on the new edition of Attix’s classic textbook on radiation dosimetry. His group and him have been recipient of two Farrington Daniels awards and two Sylvia Fedoruk awards for best paper in medical physics and he is Fellow of the AAPM, COMP and CCPM. In the area of medical physics training Seuntjens launched, with L. Beaulieu at Laval University, the medical physics research training network (MPRTN) supported by Canadian federal granting agencies with the goal to revamp and broaden the research training of medical physicists through collaboration between two CAMPEP programs, academic, government, clinical and industry partners. Seuntjens’ research is supported by Canadian funding councils such as NSERC, CIHR and by industry.
